Andrew Tanswell, Co-founder and ceo (London)
Andrew is a serial social entrepreneur who founded Startle to accelerate and extend the breadth and depth of Impact Businesses which tackle poverty and protection of the environment in sub-Saharan Africa. Over his 31 year career his experience includes management consultancy, public sector and charitable organisations with a prime focus on business and strategy development. His experience includes leading multi-national and multi-disciplinary emergency relief programmes in Iraq and Somalia. Trained as an engineer, Andrew is naturally a ‘builder’, and has a strong belief in creating values-based enterprises within sub-Saharan Africa enabling local teams to create sustainable businesses.
adriaan mol, co-founder and coo (kenya)
Adriaan has extensive experience combining innovative technology with business, and has established several successful micro for-profit social impact enterprises that deliver sustainable, long-term impact for low-income communities. Adriaan co-founded ToughStuff with Andrew, as well as BushProof in Madagascar, an enterprise which creates markets and provides affordable clean water to low-income communities. Adriaan has a unique and keen understanding of the needs and motivations of low-income people having lived and worked in sub-Saharan Africa for most of his life.
Ralf van Veenendaal, Technical Manager (Kenya)
Ralf is a highly experienced mechatronics technical designer, and developer of integrated electronic circuits with specialised embedded firm- and software. Ralf first worked with Startle through his position at a Dutch electronics & software design house, which was contracted by Startle for specialised technology development. Ralf developed the solar home power systems with integrated pay-as-you-go electronics and server software for our venture PoaPower. Ralf joined Startle in 2017 as our Technical Manager and is responsible for the development of our hard- and software.
Livingstone mageto, operations manager (Kenya)
As Operations Manager, Livingstone is responsible for the day to day management of our portfolio ventures. He has extensive experience in consumer research and management in East, West and Southern Africa for clients such as Safaricom, USAID, Zuku, M-Farm and the World Bank. Livingstone brings a great deal of knowledge in maximising operational efficiency and profitability from his roles with Senaca East Africa and the Private Security Training Academy. Livingston also has a strong marketing background, from his experience with TNS, a market and social research company, as Research and Insights Executive.
phoebe olulo, Accountant and compliance officer (kenya)
Phoebe is responsible for managing our Finance, Human Resources and Compliance departments. She holds a Bachelor of Commerce and Business Administration degree from Kenya's Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. She also holds a higher diploma in Human Resources Management from Kenya's college of Human Resources Management. She has worked as an accountant and Head of recruitment for Penda Health (social enterprise in the health industry), and as an HR administrator for People Insights (HR consultancy firm). Her experience and qualifications in human resource management and finance bring a great deal of business acumen to Startle and our portfolio ventures.
Fiona Mwaura, Sales, marketing & partnerships (kenya)
Fiona manages the Kenyan sales and partnerships relationships. Experienced in marketing, her skills include networking and liaising with commercial and non-profit partners as well as government. Fiona founded a relocation company in Kenya which she grew and successfully sold in 2012 to a French-based company. She then worked with Senaca EA, the multi-national security company headquartered in Ireland. Her personal networks, practical understanding of business in Kenya and project manager experience is evidenced by her work implementing and assessing the businesses; and building operational partnerships with Kenyan organisations and government at the highest level.
Lily Steele, business builder (london)
As a skilled investment professional, economist and entrepreneur, Lily works with Startle’s portfolio of social impact businesses at each stage of the growth process to ensure they are ‘Investment Ready’. Her commercial experience includes investment and risk analysis for asset management, where she qualified as a Chartered Financial Analyst, as well as social impact start-up. Lily’s experience with investor relations and business growth supports the development and scaling of Startle’s portfolio of social impact businesses.
Daniel Webb, business builder (london)
Daniel brings on and offline marketing and advertising expertise to the Startle team. He has led the development of several commercial marketing campaigns and online web platforms. His management experience spans UX and design, brand communications and campaign development. He is tasked with developing the Startle brand, through social engagement, UX, on-line presence and brand communications enabling greater reach of Startle’s social enterprises to the global community.
Eline Sleurink, business builder (London)
Eline combines commercial experience in marketing, business development and the asset management industry with a thorough academic understanding of inclusive development theories and African entrepreneurial ecosystems. Eline has a Master's in African Studies from Leiden University and has worked as an academic researcher. Bringing skills as a Client Portfolio Manager from her time at J.P. Morgan Asset Management and as a Business Development Assistant at Impact Hub Accra, Ghana, Eline helps bridge the gap between investors and investee communities alike.
