To help build and develop social impact enterprises across Africa which lift people out of poverty and protect the environment.

Our Aims

  • Alleviate poverty
  • Improve health & well-being
  • Protect the environment
  • Create economic opportunity

Our Focus

Water, sanitation and hygiene

Lack of safe drinking water, sanitation and hygiene cause much disease worldwide, especially amongst children. Diseases, which are largely preventable by hand washing, such as diarrhoeal disease and pneumonia, are largely responsible for such unacceptably high child mortality rates worldwide.

Globally, SaniTap sells an innovative hand-washing solution especially suitable for refugee crisis situations and remote rural areas with no access to running water.

Access to energy and technology

Startle is building two ventures Tinder Eco Fuels and CFC that produce sustainable biomass as a cooking fuel for low-income consumers in Kenya and Madagascar. Our other venture in Kenya, PoaPower provides off-grid solar powered electricity to rural communities.

Startle is also piloting Wild Web, which will provide internet services to rural communities, with a focus on digitally connecting remote schools, clinics and individuals.

Agriculture and Food Security

Improvements in agriculture can have a significant impact on food security, poverty and climate change.

Startle is presently undertaking market research into an exciting agri-venture: the production of nutritious and affordable Animal Feeds from a neglected local resource for the growing livestock  population, who's feed is currently sourced from human food such as maize and wild fish stocks.

The Sustainable Development Goals

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDG's) came into effect in January 2016 and are "a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity."  The SDG's are governed by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) but can only be achieved through the collaborative effort and collective work of government, private sector, civil society and ultimately the individual.

As an organisation, Startle aims to alleviate poverty, improve health & well-being, protect the environment and create economic opportunity. Our aims are closely aligned with the SDG's (as shown below), and are achieved across our businesses.  You can find out more about which ventures address specific SDG's by visiting our individual venture websites.
